How To Avoid Conflict In The Workplace

We spend a lot of time at work, so it’s only natural to want to create a friendly environment where you and your co-workers get along. And it’s healthy, too, since the last thing we need is to be stressing over co-workers when we all should be focused on our own jobs. But sometimes conflicts are unavoidable and no matter how much you try to extend an olive branch, there’s always that one person who really rubs everyone else the wrong way and creates tension in your workspace. If you’ve been feeling like losing it at work, here are some tips on how to avoid conflict in the workplace:

  1. Understanding the underlying issue

Most of the time, the conflict isn’t what’s happening at hand and there’s usually something deeper happening. It can be some new policy or project at work that’s making everyone stress out and start to get angry with each other. Or it could be the simple fact that someone forgot to clean out the sink at work, so now you’re blowing up at everyone you come into contact with. So before you get upset with someone at work, think about what’s happening with yourself and at work so that you can better understand why people might be on edge.

  1. Generational differences

There are a lot of different generations in today’s workforce and because of this, many might butt heads on those differences. A fresh-out-of-school co-worker might get frustrated with a baby boomer over their lack of experience with technology and that can create conflict in the workplace. But being aware of generational differences and learning to be patient and understanding with co-workers can help decrease the number of conflicts in your office.

  1. Keep a level head

When you happen to find yourself in a conflict, try to keep a level head as much as possible. Take a minute to collect your thoughts before you say anything you shouldn’t. Also try to figure out how you’d like to handle conflict before it happens so that you don’t lose your cool.
